Sons of Art and Alice Steinhaus
Alice Rhinehart and Art Steinhaus has four sons, all born and raised in Max, North Dakota. They are pictured below in the late 1940s or early 1950s. From left: Edward Arthur (1914-1969), Ralph Quentin (1921-2011), John Roderick (1925-2000) and James Fredrick (1929-still living 2015)
The above two photos were taken in 1939 in front of the family home in Max. On left the brothers are from left, Ed, Ralph and John with Jim in front. On the right Alice and Art are included amongst their sons.
Edward Arthur Steinhaus (1914-1969)
Ed was born when Art and Alice still lived in the Steinhaus Brothers store in Max. He graduated from the Max School in 1932 and from North Dakota State University in Fargo in 1936. He earned his doctor of philosophy degree in bacteriology at Ohio Stare University in Columbus. He married Mabry Clark (1914-2005) in 1940 in Auburn, Alabama. They lived in Montana and later the San Francisco Bay area of California where he started the field of Insect Pathology at University of California, Berkeley. They had three children, Margaret "Peggy" Ann (1947-), Timothy Clark (1949-) and Cynthia Alice (1955-). The family moved to Newport Beach in Orange County in 1963, where Ed set up the School of Biological Sciences at the new University of California, Irvine, campus.
